01 — Origin

Every AKOAKO product begins with a mother's struggle.

AKOAKO-STUDIO has been making products for the nursing years since 2003 — baby slings, nursing capes, and more. There is one principle that has never changed in how we design.

To answer the troubles mothers face.

We do not make things because we want to make them. We make them because mothers are struggling, and the struggle calls for an answer. Slings, capes, bibs — they all came in this order.

One of the channels was a small card we tucked into every package. "Tell us your parenting troubles." We kept including this card for years, not as a campaign, but as a way of life.

02 — 2004

2004 — when nursing rooms did not exist.

Around 2004, when the nursing cape was born, there were almost no nursing rooms in Japanese cities.

A stroller in public drew impatient looks. Barrier-free design was still a future concept. Going outside with a baby was, in many ways, not welcomed by society.

In this world, mothers who wanted to breastfeed faced one wall above all others.

"There is nowhere I can nurse my baby." From the cards

This was the voice that filled our cards more than any other.

03 — The moment

One day, the answer simply arrived.

I had read those voices over and over. Then, one day, while doing something entirely unrelated, an image appeared in my mind.

The cape a hairdresser drapes over your shoulders.

If I could make that, for mothers out in the world, they could create their own private space anywhere. The shape and the name — "nursing cape" — arrived together, all at once.

I did not deliberate. I have never been the kind of person who deliberates. "This is the only answer," I thought, and I started making it.

04 — The form

A rectangle of double gauze. That is all.

Image — 02 / 10 ways

The first nursing cape was just a rectangle of double gauze. No special shape, no high-tech features. Simply one piece of cloth. And precisely because of that, it could do many things.

We called it the "10-way cloth."

Our original tagline was "Anywhere, anytime, always useful!" Over the years, it evolved into "Your nursing room, wherever you go." The core has never changed.

05 — The principle

Light and versatile — my absolute condition.

Why did I insist on the simple form of a single cloth? Because I had raised my first child. A mother's bag is heavy. Diapers, spare clothes, milk, toys, books, snacks, towels.

If, on top of that, you add:

your bag grows heavier with every item. The AKOAKO nursing cape replaces all of these with a single piece of cloth.

Not a tool that adds — a cloth that subtracts.

In the years when mothers carry the most, lightness and versatility were my absolute condition.

06 — The answer

"Can I also use it for this?" The answer is always the same.

Customers ask us constantly. As a swaddle for sleep. Rolled into a nursing pillow. As a chill-blocker in air-conditioned shops. As a newborn wrap. My answer is always the same.

"Of course you can."

The AKOAKO nursing cape is made of double gauze. Babies instinctively love this fabric. Having it always close to mother means a place of safety that travels with you, for both baby and mother.

So if you wonder, "could it work for this?" — most likely, it can. The fabric itself is the answer.

07 — Customers

The uses our customers discovered.

We released it as a "nursing cape," but our customers discovered uses we had never imagined.

A voice from our customers

"Long after I stopped nursing, it became my favorite lap blanket on cold days."

Many keep using it long after the nursing years end. This was the form we had been aiming for. Not a tool for one season — a cloth that stays with a mother for life.

08 — Material

We stay devoted to Japanese-made fabrics.

Fabric that touches a baby's skin directly. Fabric a mother washes and uses, over and over. Fabric that lives on as a lap blanket long after the nursing years end. We could not entrust all of that to inexpensive imported cloth.

The density of the weave. The softness that grows with each wash. The kindness against the skin. Never compromising on the material. This, I believe, is one reason mothers continue to choose us.

And precisely because the cloth is good, it changes in character with use.

A small tear, a softened drape — both become precious.
History lives in the cloth.

This is a wish AKOAKO holds for both our capes and our slings — a shared philosophy.

09 — 20,000 voices

What over 20,000 reviews have taught us.

AKOAKO-STUDIO has received over 20,000 reviews across all products. Each one has shaped how our products have evolved. Today's nursing cape is not the same as the first one. It is a form refined, slowly, by listening.

The "tell us your troubles" card has changed shape. Today we listen through Instagram comments and direct messages, and bring those voices into the next improvement. This back-and-forth is daily life at AKOAKO.

10 — To you

To you, choosing a nursing cape.

If you are looking for a nursing cape now — the AKOAKO cloth is not a tool only for the nursing years.

Long after, it stays close — over the carrier, at sports days, as a lap blanket on cold days.

A small tear, a softened drape — both become a kind history.
A cloth like that, for your days with your baby.
